Most leaders have problem employees. You may complain or attempt to address and you may even work to fix their problem, but the lesson you’re likely missing is what their behavior is teaching you about how you’re leading.
Take a moment now to download this Monday Moment’s one page worksheet. On it, write down the three things that your favorite problem employee or poor performer does that makes you complain or feel drained. Then give thought to what you’ve done about those behaviors? If what you’re doing isn’t working, what are you changing? Most leaders will answer “nothing” and this is the problem.
The difficult employee about which you spend time complaining is often not the one who needs changing. Their behavior is usually a reflection of how you lead and if the bad behavior continues, it’s because of how you’re leading. Whether it’s an attitude problem, negativity, a lack of professionalism or the absence of productivity, their actions are your mirror. Take a closer look at the actions you took thus far and what rewards, consequences or changes need to be made.
I’m Monica Wofford and that’s your Monday Moment. Have a great week, an even better Monday, and of course, stay contagious!
