Well hello there and Happy Monday! I’m Monica Wofford and this is your Monday Moment.
Have you ever been shoe shopping? If you’re a woman watching this, you’re likely laughing at such a silly question. If you’re a gentleman, you might say “well, maybe, months ago”. Either way, you know when the shoe fits… and when it doesn’t.
If only it were that easy when it comes to employees and their position, so let’s talk about job fit for a minute.
When someone is in the wrong position for what ARE their natural gifts, skills, and talents, they might be able to DO the job, but they will likely never be incredibly amazing at it.
Think of it this way… imagine you’re in a dog park and you spend a hour trying to teach your dog how to climb a tree. Some might leap, or a Belgian might actually appear to climb up in it, but most dogs will look at you and want to please, but have no idea what you’re really asking. It’s not a skill set we expect of them.
But then why do we expect every person to be able to perform every skill with the same prowess if we just give them enough training or they work hard enough at it?
In job fit for leaders, seek to find each person’s super-power. What do they LOVE doing? Incorporate that or what it takes to do that, into the position. Matching people and positions is about: Uncovering (their talents), Discovering (their super powers), and Adjusting (their responsibilities) without implying that an adjustment means he or she is missing something.
I’m Monica Wofford and let’s keep talking… leadership.
