Well hello there and Happy Monday! I’m Monica Wofford and this is your Monday Moment.
As we clarified your expectations and emphasized the value of caring in prior episodes, let’s tie today back to the people you lead and how much you really DO care about them.
In the book Let’s Talk Leadership, leadership, empathy, and emotional intelligence are a big part of the discussion and each could be entire training or coaching programs, but if we were to boil them down to a simple sentence:
Care about the people you lead or find another position.
Ouch, that’s a strong statement.
But the world is changing and so are the rules to leading and the reality is a leader must in fact care about at least these elements of those you lead, at a minimum:
- Who are they?
- What is their style?
- What do they need?
- Do they feel valued?
- Do they contribute?
Who they are and what is their style or personality would be a part of emotional intelligence. Knowing what they need requires you to care enough to ask or notice, and feeling valued and making a contribution is largely about performance and their connection to the bigger picture. Those last two are where most leaders focus. Expand and grow and care or you might… be the leader left out or behind as things continue to change around us.
I’m Monica Wofford and let’s keep talking… leadership.
