Well hello there and Happy Monday! I’m Monica Wofford and this is your Monday Moment.
Imagine for a moment you’ve started a new role and no one tells you what to do or how to do it. It might feel like being on another planet and like your boss is an alien who speaks another language! Okay, well that’s a bit dramatic, but in your own leadership role, let’s keep that kind of confusion from happening.
For all the team members you have the privilege of leading, who have just or recently landed on your planet, take the time to have an initial calibration conversation. This consists of three important elements:
- Your top three expectations
- Your top three priorities of their initial performance
- And asking the team member what his or her expectations are of you
Calibration allows for alignment and keeps things running smoothly. Imagine if your space truck weren’t calibrated to the right planetary environment, the kind of disaster that could create. And while an employee floundering may not seem like a disaster just yet, you also don’t want them wandering around the office looking for things to do as if they’re lost in space.
I’m Monica Wofford and let’s keep talking… leadership.
