Well hello there and Happy Monday! I’m Monica Wofford and this is your Monday Moment.

Leadership often comes down to one powerful concept.

Ownership.

Not just of results, but of behavior, decisions, and outcomes. It’s kind of like “my circus, MY monkeys”, or maybe it’s more like YOU are the official sheriff in town.

Much like that sheriff in an old western, strong leaders don’t look for just who’s at fault. They look at something from all angles. They look at who all’s involved and they look for what’s next. What happened? What needs to be done about it? And what do we do to prevent it the next time the wheel comes off of the proverbial stage coach.

In your own workplace, ownership might sound like:

  • “Here’s what I’ll do differently next time”
  • “Let’s figure out how to improve this”
  • “What can we learn from this?”

Because ownership creates progress, whereas blame creates delay. And teams often mirror what they see from their leader… or, sheriff.

This week, here’s something to consider:

Are you truly being accountable, owning the issue, or are you looking for someone else to take that blame and ownership?

And instead, where can you model ownership in a way your team will notice?

I’m Monica Wofford and let’s keep talking… leadership.
