Well hello there and Happy Monday! I’m Monica Wofford and this is your Monday Moment.

Leadership roles are assigned daily. Promotions happen often and new name tags and offices are handed out, with careful thought, but also with great frequency

But followership? That’s earned.

People don’t just follow leaders because they have to. Not for long at least.

They follow leaders they trust, admire, or value.

In truth, it’s not much different than high school. The cool kid crowd or the favorite band for which you had a poster or the star athletes were followed because they were admired or valued and maybe trusted… blindly in some cases. As adults, our value systems are often different, but the concept is very similar.

Employees follow leaders they respect, or leaders who make them feel better, even more so than that favorite band did when you were growing up. They follow the leaders who give them hope or maybe even guidance or inspiration to be a better version of themselves, with encouragement.

Those leaders often:

  • Support growth
  • Show consistency
  • Lead with both strength and awareness

Because at the end of the day, leadership isn’t about today’s role or position. Heck, even the cool kids were only cool until graduation.

It’s about impact.

And the leaders people choose to follow are the ones who consistently make that impact meaningful. So, this week consider:

If people didn’t have to follow you… Would they still choose to?

I’m Monica Wofford and let’s keep talking… leadership.
